Mental Health Awareness Week has arrived, and this year’s theme is Movement. Exercise is an essential aspect of well-being, and any sort of physical activity can make a significant difference in how we feel. It also enhances our appearance, which can be a huge incentive. Whatever your motivation, doing something good for yourself is always worthwhile. If it works for you, you deserve to feel proud and energised by your achievements. Regular physical activity benefits not only your body but also your mind. Sometimes, you might feel the positive effects right away!

Getting Started: Easy and Enjoyable Activities

It can be challenging to get started, but Mental Health Awareness Week is the perfect opportunity. Here are some suggestions:

  • Start Small: Begin with an activity that brings you pleasure. It could be a 5-minute walk around your neighbourhood at a brisk pace.
  • Dance It Out: Put on your favourite tunes and dance in your living room. Invite others to join for more fun.
  • Cycling and Simple Exercises: Get on your bike, do jumping jacks, work on your abs, or set a target for pushups.
  • Keep It Manageable: Choose an activity that is not too challenging to avoid discouragement. The key is to look forward to the activity, making it more likely to become a positive habit.

If you have any health issues, consult your GP before starting a new exercise regimen to ensure it's safe for you.

Tips for New Exercisers

  • Start Small and Time Yourself: Don't overthink it, just start! Use a timer to keep your sessions short and manageable.
  • Get Others Involved: Exercising with friends can add fun and provide extra motivation when you need it.
  • Celebrate Your Success: Once you complete your exercise, take a moment to smile and feel proud. You've proved to yourself that you can make positive changes.

Building a Habit and Finding Resources

  • Online Resources: Many YouTubers offer free training advice and sessions. You're sure to find a channel that suits your needs.
  • Join a Gym or Class: Consider joining a local gym or a yoga class to meet new people and stay motivated.
  • Participate in Challenges: Many charities organise walking or running challenges for all fitness levels. Joining one can provide support and motivation. I participated in one this year and received incredible support and a free t-shirt!

Final Thoughts

Whatever activity you choose, make sure it's enjoyable and safe. Starting small can lead to building a lasting, positive habit. Have fun, stay safe, and good luck on your journey to better mental and physical health!
